Information about the video series "13 Reasons Why"

  •  May 12, 2017

Dear Harmony parents and guardians,
We want to bring to your attention concerns that have been raised regarding a Netflix series titled 13 Reasons Why and its possible impact on your students. The series is based on a novel about a 17-year-old girl who takes her own life and the reasons leading up to her decision to do so.
While the series raises the importance of talking about negative thoughts, it’s having the unintentional impact of distressing our students. Research shows that exposure to real or dramatized stories of self-harm increases the risk of doing so. While many youth know the difference between a TV drama and real life, we recommend reminding your student that the show is fictional and there is help available to them if they are struggling with negative thoughts or emotions.
